Why “New Year, New Me” is Unfair to You.

January 1, 2018

Beginning today, we will start to hear the statement, “New Year, New me” quite often. Those saying this may be referring to new fitness goals, healthier eating, moving on from a failed relationship, quitting unhealthy habits and many other positive changes that one can embrace. Regardless, the new year is a time to reflect on oneself and embrace the exciting beginning of a new measurement of time in our lives.

However, the phrase “New Year, New Me” is unfair to the one saying it; its a disservice to the improvements one has made in the previous year/s. Every year comes with either highs, lows or both. The high points in those years have brought forth happiness that have become memories. They have also brought us positive change and maturity. The low points in those years, although heartbreaking and frustrating,  have brought us lessons and wisdom that strengthen our foundation upon which we place our personal philosophies and beliefs on.

Regardless of what type of years you may have gone through, each one has helped shape you into who you are today. Each year your story and journey in life carry over to the next year, you simply do not become a “new” person overnight. For this reason, a “New You” is a counter-productive statement to your goal in improving and adding quality to your life every new year.

I invite you to rephrase the statement to “New Year, Improved or Wiser Me.” In this way, you are paying respect to who you have become through your journey in life in both the good and the bad. You are honoring yourself for who you've become through your experiences and struggles.

Now, to improve on anything, one has to step forward and just lean into whatever it is you're attempting to accomplish. It doesn't have to be achieved overnight, aim at 1% daily improvements every time. Over time that will add up, and before you know it you'll be way ahead than where you began! So as I would like to do every year, I have come up with 20 things you can do to make 2018 a great year.  Happy New Year and don't forget to embrace your journey along the way because you will always be you. The only difference every year is that you will be wiser, more knowledgeable and ready to tackle obstacles with a mindset of experience and optimism.

  1. Strive to become 1% better every day. Don't go to sleep the same way you woke up! Be More!

  2. Choose at least one MAJOR thing that you want to accomplish this year, write it down and plan to DO IT! I know you have a bucket list. Accomplish at least 1!

  3. Help at least one person every day. Make someone smile, donate to charity, help a panhandler, open the door for the elderly, call a long lost friend or relative, volunteer time, say thank you, leave a nice tip, etc...ONE thing every day.

  4. Work on your leadership and team-building characteristics. Leaders inspire and help bring people back up to their feet. No matter your role at work, be a leader that helps others. Leaders build leaders.

  5. Work on your healthy eating habits! Eat quality foods at all time. (Use common sense) Ex. Pizza vs. Spring Mix Chicken Salad. Eliminate Sugars! Cut away the processed junk! Get Your Foodie Mind Right!

  6. Be the most driven and motivated person you know! Motivation is contagious!

  7. Change your world by changing your thoughts, words, and attitude. Use encouraging and positive language even when and if you're going through difficult times. Remember, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your character. What legacy are you leaving behind?

  8. Take responsibility for your life! Don't complain, don't blame, and don't make excuses.

  9. Read the book "The Alchemist"  by Paulo Coelho.

  10. Make time for YOU! Take time every day to close your eyes, listen to your breath, relax your mind and just be one within yourself.

  11. Iron sharpens Iron. Surround yourself with those who lift you up! There are people out there who would love to see you fail, watch who you surround yourself with.

  12. Say "Please," "Thank You" and "I Love You" more often.

  13. Work on listening to understand not to respond.

  14. Track your progress and success as you go! Attention to details!

  15. Listen to inspirational speeches and leadership podcast. This will feed your mindset! Opt for these things on your commute to and from work.

  16. “Fear, frustration, and failure are overcome by faith, focus, forward-motion, and follow-through" - Wayne Cotton

  17. Take some time off the TV, Facebook, Instagram and all that disconnects YOU from YOU!

  18. "I don't have time" is an atrocious EXCUSE! Make time! Yes, you can! Let's go!

  19. Invest more in your family, children, best friends, pets! They are your squad!

  20. Get Moving! Dedicate yourself to exercising at least three times a week! Find a park, track, local gym, group fitness facility, CrossFit box, etc...  and connect with them! But remember, you can't outrun a bad diet! Refer to number 5!

There you have it! 20 things to help make 2018 a year to remember and become a BETTER YOU! Let 2018 not just be another year,  let it be a year you worked on yourself and uplift those around you! Take one at a time and work on it and become better every day! Feel free to let me know which one of the above resonated with you! New Year, Better You!

Happy New Year to you and your loved ones!
